Prevalence is defined as the number of cases of a given disease in a specified population at a designated time per 100,000 people. For GBD 2016, we estimated the prevalence and incidence of genital and reproductive tract infection with several common sexually transmitted infections, including Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhea, Trichomonas vaginalis, Treponema pallidum (syphilis), and genital herpes associated with seroprevalent HSV-2. Separate estimates were completed for early syphilis and adult tertiary syphilis. ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes associated with each cause in the GBD 2016 cause-specific mortality analyses are listed below. Of note, mortality was assumed to be zero in trichomoniasis and genital herpes infection, and YLDs due to congenital syphilis were not estimated.
