Maternal disorders are those complications occurring during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Seven different statistical models were completed for GBD 2016. These included 1) abortion, ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, 2) obstructed labor and uterine rupture, 3) maternal hemorrhage (including placental disorders), 4) maternal sepsis, 5) other maternal infections, 6) hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, 7) eclampsia. Other direct maternal disorders were estimated using a YLD-to-YLL ratio approach used for multiple different GBD causes. Late maternal death and indirect maternal disorders, including HIV-related maternal death, were not assigned any disability as the disability associated with them was assumed to be included in estimates for the underlying conditions.
