Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) causes influenza-like symptoms during the acute period following infection and can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) if untreated. HIV attacks the immune system of its host, leaving infected individuals more susceptible to opportunistic infections like tuberculosis. Although there are two different subtypes of HIV, HIV-1 and HIV-2, no distinction is made in our estimation process or presentation of results.
