The total score is a combination of scores (out of 10) from twelve different categories: security apparatus, factionalized elites, group grievance, economic decline, uneven economic development, human flight and brain drain, state legitimacy, public services, human rights and rule of law, demographic pressures, refugees and IDPs, external intervention. The maximum overall score is 120. Higher scores represent greater instability.
