After the extinction of wolves in Germany, the first wild pups were born in the Muskauer Heide in northeast Saxony in spring 2000. Their parents originated from neighboring Poland. While the species established rather hesitantly in the following five years, there has been a continuous dispersal of wolves since 2006. By now, there are territorial wolves in almost all German federal states. Meanwhile, wolves are observed more frequently in neighboring countries, particularly in the Czech Republic, Denmark and Austria. In most cases, these wolves originate from the Central European Population, which is shared with Poland.
