    Data is collected for 26 habitat specialist butterflies (low mobility species restricted to semi-natural habitats) and 25 more widespread butterflies (which use both semi-natural and general countryside habitats) using data collected at 5,737 sample locations.

    The year-to-year fluctuations in butterfly numbers are often linked to natural environmental variation, especially weather conditions.
